| Abstract Scope |
Blown-powder laser-beam directed energy deposition (DED-LB-BP) has attracted significant industrial attention because of its unique capabilities for cladding and repair, three-dimensional printing, and multi-material deposition. Accurate in-situ measurement and closed-loop control of the working distance between the deposition head and the melt pool during the deposition process could significantly improve the printing quality. This paper presents the design and implementation of an in-situ optical working distance sensor based on the chromatic aberration. The sensor utilizes radiation emitted from the melt pool as the light source and leverages the existing optical system within the DED machine. The sensor is calibrated for 316 SS using multiple single tracks printed at varying working distances and its performance is validated by comparing the sensor outputs against ground-truth profilometer measurements. This initial development demonstrates that the low-cost sensor requires no additional space within the build-chamber for the sensor, achieving sufficient measurement fidelity for DED-LB-BP process. |
