| Abstract Scope |
X-ray computed tomography (XCT) provides nondestructive, three-dimensional characterization of materials, enabling visualization and quantification of internal features such as cracking, swelling, porosity, manufacturing defects, and geometry changes without destroying specimens. Over the past several years, the Nuclear Science User Facilities (NSUF) program has invested in XCT at Idaho National Laboratory to implement state-of-the-art techniques to integrate XCT into the post irradiation examination workflow. XCT data can guide targeted destructive examinations and support model validation. This talk focuses on the application of XCT to nuclear materials with an emphasis on TRISO fuel. Additionally, data acquired in support of NSUF proposals is presented. Lastly, advancements enabled by NSUF instrument scientist support are shared, showing how the nuclear community can benefit from connecting user-driven research with specialized radiological facilities, experienced staff, and multiscale analysis workflows. |
