Recent studies of grain growth in polycrystals have been able to quantify grain boundary migration rates in a variety of materials. One of the principal findings has been that grain boundary curvature is not a good predictor of the direction or speed of grain boundary migration, overturning what was considered a governing principle of microstructure evolution. Another surprising result is the fastest observed grain boundaries are also those with zero curvature. This presentation will focus on the mechanism for, and the impact of, the migration of flat, singular grain boundaries. When there is a cusp in the energy of a grain boundary as a function of orientation, he Herring equilibrium condition becomes an inequality and the dihedral angle of the grain boundary can take a range of values. Simulated migration under the weighted mean curvature driving force can lead to unexpected behavior that contradicts conventional grain growth theory. |
