Intermetallic gamma-TiAl based alloys have been successfully introduced as structural materials for turbine blades in civil jet engines. Now additive manufacturing (AM) processes are considered as an additional manufacturing route to expand the range of their use.
In order to simulate the intrinsic heating and quenching cycles, which occur below the top layer during an AM process, we used a quenching and deformation dilatometer DIL 805 A/D operated in the Hereon run HEMS beamline of the Petra III synchrotron radiation source. Advanced gamma-TiAl based alloys with different Al and Nb contents were exposed to several cycles (starting from 1400 °C) with quenching/heating rates of 200 °C/s. Simultaneously, the diffraction patterns were recorded with a frame rate of 10 Hz.
Depending on the alloy composition we identified significant differences in the transformation kinetics and transformation mechanisms, ranging from fast massive transformations and order-disorder transformations to slower diffusion controlled lamellar growth. |
