| Abstract Scope |
Stroh established the first quantitative criterion for crack nucleation from dislocation pileups against grain boundaries by combining pileup-induced tensile stress with the requirement that crack formation reduces the total system energy. In this work, the Concurrent Atomistic–Continuum (CAC) method is employed to simulate dislocation pileups against grain boundaries and the associated crack nucleation process at the mesoscale. The evolution of dislocation pileups, local tensile stress, system energy, and crack nucleation will be quantified to evaluate the analytical predictions of Stroh's criterion. |
