Abstract Scope |
Magnesium alloy AZ31 is highly valued in the aerospace and automotive industries due to its high specific strength; however, it remains largely unexplored in laser wire additive manufacturing. This research aims to understand how variations in processing parameters of laser wire DED, specifically laser power (500W – 800W) and scan speed (5 mm/s - 24 mm/s), influence single bead geometry. Experiments were conducted using a FormAlloy DED system with 1.2 mm wire diameter, where a series of single-track trials were performed at two feed rates: 0.65 m/min and 0.3 m/min. Some single tracks exhibited balling and lack of fusion, as expected with trial-and-error parameter selection; therefore, roughness and bead geometry measurements were taken to construct a processing map to help predict further optimal parameters suitable for printing. The optimal region was narrowed down based on the single tracks that were well adhered and had uniform bead geometry across their length. |
