Abstract Scope Hall – Heroult electrolysis cells use pre-baked carbon blocks as anodes for aluminium production. Carbon anodes conduct electricity into the cells and provide carbon for the reaction with oxygen released during electrolysis of alumina. For smooth operation of electrolysis cells, carbon anodes need to have high apparent density, high thermal shock resistance, low electrical resistivity and low chemical reactivity. This paper deals with anode electrical resistivity. The paper describes, based on the analysis of plant data, relationships between anode electrical resistivity with other anode properties. Insight gained from these findings could be used to achieve significant savings in lowering power consumption and in reducing aluminium production cost by keeping the electrical resistivity at low levels.
