Presentation Title Sustainability Benefits of a Modern Shaft Calciner Operation
Author(s) Les C. Edwards
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Les C. Edwards
Abstract Scope Rain Carbon commenced commercial operation of a 370,000 t/y shaft calciner in India in 2022 that is now achieving benchmark performance in CPC quality, SO2 and CO2 emissions. The calciner is located in a special economic zone in Atchutapuram and exports 100% of the CPC product. It features an advanced waste heat recovery and power generation system and an ammonia based SO2 scrubber which produces a valuable ammonia sulfate byproduct. The paper will present a review of key aspects of the shaft calciner design and operation. The bulk density benefits of shaft CPC are well known and the plant includes a sophisticated CPC blending system which allows homogeneous blending of up to 370,000 t of rotary kiln CPC with the shaft product. The sustainability benefits of the shaft calciner will be highlighted which includes a lower CO2 footprint per ton of CPC compared to rotary kiln calciners.
