Abstract Scope |
Environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) are required for protecting silicon carbide-based ceramic matrix composites in current and future gas turbines. Multicomponent rare earth disilicates are potential next-generation EBCs that offer many desirable properties. A key challenge to commercializing these coatings is achieving requisite material properties without relying on expensive and scarce rare earth elements such as lutetium and scandium. Herein we describe computational and experimental efforts to develop high-performance, low-cost multicomponent rare earth disilicate EBCs. Bulk material and coating properties are measured against baseline ytterbium disilicate using various techniques including a specialized laser-based rig recently developed at NETL that is capable of closely simulating gas turbine combustion environments. |
