Dilute alloying additions and impurity elements can profoundly influence phase transformations and microstructural evolution in metallic alloys. Through interfacial segregation and clustering, even trace elements can significantly alter phase transformation pathways and resultant microstructures. Solute segregation can markedly modify the thermodynamic and kinetic characteristics of interfaces, while solute clusters may act as precursors to precipitate formation. However, the atomic-scale mechanisms underlying these effects remain incompletely understood owing to the limited availability of direct experimental evidence. Recent advances in atomic-resolution chemical mapping using scanning transmission electron microscopy have enabled the direct observation of segregated interfaces and solute clusters. When combined with atomistic modelling, these techniques provide unprecedented insights into the mechanisms by which dilute alloying and impurity elements influence phase transformations. This presentation will highlight selected examples of solute segregation, clustering, and precipitation in magnesium, aluminium and titanium alloys, demonstrating the critical roles of trace solutes in controlling microstructure evolution. |
