| Abstract Scope |
Silicon has attracted extensive research interest as an anode material for next-generation lithium-ion batteries, owing to its natural abundance, low cost, and theoretical specific capacity nearly an order of magnitude greater than graphite, the current industry standard. However, practical application remains limited by severe volume expansion (200–300%) during lithiation and pronounced voltage hysteresis (200–300 mV), causing substantial cycling energy loss. This hysteresis is essential to silicon's electrochemical behavior, yet its origins and mechanisms remain poorly understood. We investigate the impact of mechanical deformations and phase transformations on voltage hysteresis in silicon anodes using finite element simulations. We develop a novel MFEM-based framework to model Li–Si alloying in complex silicon electrode microstructures, incorporating elastic, plastic, and chemical deformation using multiphysics electrochemical simulations. The framework predicts half-cell voltage hysteresis, precisely determines the state of charge from cell voltage, and quantifies the influence of material and mechanical properties on hysteresis in silicon anodes. |
