Abstract Scope |
The microstructural investigation of ESCs and porosity in a newly developed non-heat-treated HPDC AlSi9MnVZr alloy is carried out under varying shot speeds. The results show that increasing fast shot speed leads to a significant reduction in the diameter and total area fraction of ESCs. The morphology becomes roundish, and the distribution of ESCs becomes more uniform across the cross-sections. A higher accumulation of porosity is distinctly observed in the center region, where shrinkage porosities are concentrated due to the inability of the liquid metal to properly feed into the areas with higher ESCs during the final stages of solidification. The increase of fast shot speed significantly reduces the overall volume fraction of porosity within the casting and it also results in a more dispersed network of smaller pores throughout the sample, altering the overall defect distribution pattern. |
