| Abstract Scope |
Conventional ironmaking industry is facing technological challenges related to low-carbon ironmaking technologies such as hydrogen reduction process in response to climate change. However, hydrogen reduction produces Hydrogen-Direct Reduced Iron (H2-DRI) which contains little carbon (C), resulting in a high melting temperature of iron (Fe) during subsequent smelting. Thus, pre-carburization of H2-DRI can be considered.
In the present work, thermodynamic behavior of gaseous carburization of H2-DRI by CO and CH4 was evaluated. It was found that CO and CH4 favor cementite (Fe3C) formation at low and high temperature, respectively.
Experimental results showed that excessive temperature promoted decomposition of Fe3C and deposition of free C even in the case of carburization by CH4. In-situ observations further showed that combination of carburization and fluxing effectively promoted complete melting of H2-DRI under the investigated conditions. |
