| Abstract Scope |
Ni-based alloys are considered as candidate structural materials for molten salt reactors (MSRs) owing to their excellent corrosion resistance. However, aging-induced secondary phase formation during prolonged exposure within the MSR operating temperature range can alter local chemical stability and cause localized alloy degradation, yet this effect remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate the secondary-phase effects on the corrosion resistance of Ni-W alloys by coupling computational phase stability in molten chlorides with CALPHAD-based phase prediction. CALPHAD calculations predict the types, fractions, and compositions of secondary phases formed during high-temperature exposure, while the calculated redox potentials of individual phases assess phase-specific corrosion susceptibility. The results provide thermodynamics insights on corrosion-resistant phases and a basis for Ni-based alloy design by suppressing detrimental phases and stabilizing beneficial, corrosion-resistant phases during high-temperature exposure. |
