Abstract Scope Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of discontinuities and microstructures in a specimen or part are often used in property models as initial conditions or general state estimators. X-ray tomography both at the lab scale and at the synchrotron have made significant advances in the past few decades, but there are still discrepancies between those methods and higher-fidelity microscopy methods. We present two cases of using destructive serial sectioning to validate nondestructive X-ray 3D data reconstructions on the same sample. The first case compares the crystallographic information of a nickel alloy specimen obtained using high-energy diffraction microscopy with that obtained from serial sectioning with electron backscatter diffraction. The second case compares the sizes, positions, and other statistics of pores within an additively manufactured titanium alloy specimen examined using both X-ray computed tomography and serial sectioning with optical microscopy. For both cases, we examine probability of detection versus feature size.
