| Abstract Scope |
Over the past ~decade, I have helped build several startups focused on advancing metals processing and digital manufacturing, alongside my academic research and teaching activities. Through these experiences I have seen a few themes emerge: (1) day-one integration of hardware and software/simulation is the foundation of new production systems; (2) architectural innovation prevails—core technologies are not fundamentally new, rather the configuration of the system is the innovation; (3) we must rethink how we qualify new materials and processes. I will reflect on these themes through examples in metal additive manufacturing, investment casting, and design automation. |
