The isolation of a single atomic layer of graphene from graphite ushered in the era of 2D materials in 2004. However, free-standing 2D sheets tend to restack into bulk, significantly limiting their unique properties and practical applications. My group has made a great effort to construct 3D architectures from 2D sheets, which suppresses restacking while preserving the intrinsic properties of the individual layers. In this talk, I will present our strategies for the rational design and fabrication of 3D graphene architectures through our discovery of alkali-metal reactions with CO and CO2. These approaches enable the controlled synthesis of a variety of 3D graphene architectures, including shape-controlled 3D graphene and 3D surface-microporous graphene. This provides a model system for the construction of 3D structures from 2D layered materials. Finally, the exceptional performance of these materials in energy conversion and storage applications will be discussed, including solar cells, batteries, and supercapacitors. |
