Abstract Scope |
The net efficiency of gas turbine engines is limited by the operational temperature of its hot section components. Novel ultrahigh temperature coatings and material systems are needed to reach continuous and efficient operation. Refractory metals are an ideal candidate given their elevated melting temperatures and excellent mechanical properties. Additionally, the disordered structure of High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) brings unique property combinations not found in conventional alloys which could improve material performance at high temperatures. Therefore, we seek material solutions by leveraging the features of refractory metals and HEAs. In this project a novel RHEA, designed using computational thermodynamic Bayesian operation methods, was processed in EBM-AM and characterized. Substantial cracking and porosity were observed which is believed to be driven by the high oxygen content in the feedstock material. Process-structure trends are discussed, and potential mitigation strategies are proposed to eventually achieve a high-density crack-free material. |
