Compositionally graded designs enable new opportunities for materials engineers to efficiently use critical materials and tailor the properties across a component. Advances in computational power, calculation of phase diagrams (CALPHAD) thermodynamic solvers, and additive manufacturing have facilitated the design and manufacturing of gradient materials. An algorithm is developed to optimize a path between the compositional endpoints in the Nb-Ti-Al-V system, producing predictable property gradients over printable composition intervals. Relevant properties are extracted from equilibrium, CALPHAD simulations, Scheil solidification models, and a new composition- and temperature-dependent yield strength model. The quaternary space is partitioned into safe and deleterious regions, informed by the phase profile at equilibrium and during Scheil solidification. A continuous and differentiable surrogate is created for path planning across the BCC-HCP alloy phases. By engineering the algorithm’s objective function to optimize material property gradients in both the space and temperature axes, the compositional gradient is tailorable for performance. |
