Abstract Scope |
The transition from academia to a national laboratory setting can come with many hurdles that students should be ready to tackle. The foremost challenge generally faced by students when joining a national laboratory is the adjustment to the essential safety culture that is integral to all operations at the DOE national laboratories. Other challenges may be gaps in classroom instruction of fundamentals like thermodynamics of materials, or statistics for analyzing and interpreting experimental results. Other hurdles may include things that are not implicitly taught in classroom settings but are critical to success in any career in science, such as proper display of results (plot size, text size, color usage) or creating posters and oral presentation slides that concisely relay the intended message. This presentation will discuss these topics and more in the effort to help provide guidance for faculty to better prepare students for successful careers in a national laboratory. |
