| Abstract Scope |
Terbium oxide (Tb2O3) is a magneto-optical material that exhibits high Verdet constant which makes it suitable for applications in photonics. However, phase transformations with high associated volume changes and oxidation of Tb+3 to Tb+4 make processing of monolithic components challenging. This can be addressed by adding other rare earth sesquioxides such as Y2O3. The presence of Y2O3 affects the phase transformation and oxidation behavior of the material. In this work, thermogravimetric analysis combined with mass spectroscopy was used to elucidate the oxidation mechanism of solid solutions of Tb2O3 and Y2O3. Oxidation kinetics were evaluated at relevant temperatures using fully dense specimens. |
