Abstract Scope |
Swarm manufacturing is an emerging paradigm where a heterogeneous swarm of manufacturing robots cooperate with each other to execute manufacturing jobs. However, the integration of heterogeneous robots is hindered by incompatible vendor protocols, disparate hardware/software capabilities, and the lack of a universal way for task representation. This study presents Swarm Manufacturing Operating System (SMOS) Hub, a middleware framework designed to enable autonomous cooperation among heterogeneous robots without modifying their native system. It standardizes the modeling of kinematics, dynamics, and task logic across diverse robotic platforms. It translates high-level manufacturing commands to robot-specific instructions through tailored microservices. We demonstrate this framework by simultaneously controlling five types of robots - a UR20, Fanuc CRX-25iA, Vention Linear Rail, SCARA 3D printers, and mobile transporters via vendor‑supported network interfaces. The SMOS Hub establishes a foundational framework unifying heterogeneous robotic swarms, enhancing interoperability to enable flexible, reconfigurable manufacturing for Industry 4.0 applications. |
