Abstract Scope |
This work demonstrates a physics-based feedforward control approach toward process control and design optimization of an exemplar complex LPBF part geometry - the GE bracket. Leveraging a rapid, experimentally validated LPBF thermal simulation model, a feedforward process control algorithm autonomously generates a layer-wise parameter processing plan and accesses the effect of support placement to maintain thermal history control. The process-controlled GE Brackets demonstrated increased part quality. This approach reduced part weight by 19% and enabled fabrication without significant part defects or process failures. Notably, this method enables rapid, autonomous optimization of process conditions in LPBF – critical to accelerated part qualification – and reduces process development time from months to weeks. |
