| Abstract Scope |
Currently, corrosion is a concern in the design of molten salt reactors (MSRs) that still needs improved understanding to facilitate the development of the technology. Since corrosion is a kinetic process driven by chemical potential gradients between structural alloys and the melt, having a good thermodynamic representation of all relevant chemistries is necessary to address the issue. Although it is known that chromium halide dissolution is the foremost observation, very little is known about the actual phase-equilibria of MSR actinide salts (e.g., UCl3, UF4) and their respective chromium salt species (e.g., CrCl2, CrCl3, CrF2, CrF3). This presentation will report on a study using calorimetry and X-ray diffraction techniques together with the CALculation of PHAse Diagrams (CALPHAD) method to elucidate the chemical interactions among these corrosion-relevant salt systems. |
