| Abstract Scope |
This study explores the effect of incorporating multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the mechanical and tribological performance of Inconel 718 (IN718) for structural applications. IN718 metal matrix composites (MMCs) with varying MWCNT contents (0–0.5 wt%) were fabricated via high-energy ball milling and spark plasma sintering. XRD and SEM/EDS analyses confirmed uniform MWCNT dispersion and grain refinement in the matrix. Mechanical and wear tests revealed that the composite with 0.5 wt% MWCNT showed optimal performance, with microhardness and yield strength increasing by ~20.2% and ~71.4%, respectively. Additionally, the coefficient of friction and wear rate decreased by ~29% and ~84%. The enhanced properties are attributed to effective CNT reinforcement and refined microstructure. This research underscores the potential of MWCNT-reinforced IN718 MMCs for demanding applications requiring high strength and wear resistance. |
