Abstract Scope |
Magnesium alloys are particularly appreciative of finer grains. The rewards for grain refinement efforts are attractive. The present talk reviews some of the key mechanical impacts of grain size in magnesium alloys both in service and in downstream manufacturing processes. Some of the peculiarities of magnesium in relation to aluminium - a metal with which it often competes – are pointed out. Two key mechanisms are key: deformation twinning and dynamic recrystallization. Finally, some new findings on the impact of size on the response of magnesium are presented. |
