Abstract Scope |
Magnet-to-magnet recycling is important for mitigating supply chain vulnerabilities and environmental impacts associated with Nd-Fe-B magnet’s recycling process. A scalable media-flexible milling technique was applied to process Nd–Fe–B powders for sintered magnet production. Our approach enables efficient particle separation while preserving grain structure. It leads to minimal fragmentation, uniform microstructures and enhanced densification during sintering. Compared to conventional mechanical milling such as ball milling or jet milling, the process reduces contamination, preserves particle integrity and eliminates their complexities. Microstructural analysis confirms clean interparticle detachment when the process was applied to the recycling of sintered Nd-F-B magnets from electric vehicles, resulting in magnets with coercivity of 16.5 kOe, remanence of 12.2 kG, and a maximum energy product of 37.2 MGOe. Our novel process can transform the production of rare earth magnets and can be broadly applied. |
