| Abstract Scope |
Solid phase alloying (SPA) is a new energy efficient manufacturing technique that transforms scrap metal into wrought materials in minutes and at reduced energy cost. Alloys produced via SPA display starkly different internal microstructures from traditionally manufactured metals. Parametric control during SPA can lead to homogeneous alloys, super-saturated solid solutions, or even gradients of alloying chemistries. While such complex microstructures and compositions can be achieved, there is no clear understanding of how these features impact material performance or how they can be leveraged for alloy design. Using correlative nanomechanical experiments, we investigate the connection between localized chemistry and microstructural features achieved in solid state during the upcycling of Aluminum 6xxx to 7xxx grades using SPA. These alloys are compared to traditional counterparts to contextualize the alloying process and build a design framework for future alloy development, aiming to open new avenues for sustainable solid-state metallurgy. |
