A thermodynamic description of moving non-equilibrium interfaces is developed for both solid/solid and solid/liquid transformations. This treatment can be used to describe the conditions at solid/liquid interfaces during additive manufacturing. The theory is applicable to alloys where diffusion is possible in both phases and where energy is dissipated due to solute drag. To be consistent with energy dissipation, solute drag affects both the velocity of the interface and distribution coefficients for the compositions of the two phases at the interface. The approach is extended to consider the growth of ordered phases from either a liquid or a disordered crystal, thus permitting disorder trapping in ordered compounds at sufficiently high interfacial velocity. We examine how solute drag affects disorder trapping at non-equilibrium interfaces and the degree of order of compounds following rapid solidification. |
