| Abstract Scope |
Safe, low-cost aqueous batteries are attractive for large-scale energy storage, but their practical use is limited by dynamic metal-anode processes including soluble intermediate loss, nonuniform metal deposition, and parasitic hydrogen evolution. This presentation discusses how real-time visualization and spatially resolved characterization guide materials design to control these processes. First, a seed-in-nanoshell ZnO@Ag@C anode is shown to actively restore dissolved zincate: ion-sieving carbon confines zincate while Ag seeds direct its redeposition, improving reversibility in alkaline Zn batteries. Second, this alloy-seeding concept is extended from particles to thick porous current collectors, where a Cu@Ag-underlayer architecture promotes bottom-up Zn filling and suppresses surface dendrites. Finally, manganese telluride is introduced as a hydrogen-evolution-resistant Mn anode; optical observations, electrochemistry, and phase analysis reveal that Te alloying stabilizes aqueous Mn redox and enables improved full-cell cycling. Together, these studies establish design principles for controlling reactive metal anodes in aqueous batteries. |
