Abstract Scope How much is too much; and why? It is clear that some carbon and boron is essential to provide resistance to oxidation-assisted cracking in (Co/Ni) superalloys, but at the same time borides and carbides have been shown to suffer from oxidation ahead of crack tips. This suggests a number of possibilities as to how carbon and boron in solution in grain boundaries may be beneficial, and how these species may be transported along boundaries during oxidation. Here, we explore these issues using atom probe tomography, SEM and Xe plasma FIB-SIMS on cracks produced during slow strain rate tensile testing, with the aim of understanding the embrittlement mechanisms at the tips.
