| Abstract Scope |
Most synchrotron-based LPBF studies to date have used near-infrared lasers, while much less is known about how shorter-wavelength lasers, such as blue and green lasers, alter melt-pool behavior in highly reflective metals such as copper. To address this gap, we developed a blue-laser LPBF platform that can be used both in the laboratory and at synchrotron beamlines. The system includes a continuous-wave blue laser, a compact powder spreading and build module, and broad optical access for high-speed visible-light imaging, infrared imaging, schlieren imaging, and synchrotron X-ray imaging. In this talk, I will describe the system design and its functionality, and present initial results from blue-laser processing of copper and copper alloys. This platform provides a practical tool for studying how shorter-wavelength lasers influence absorption, melt-pool stability, and defect formation in reflective metal additive manufacturing. |
