| Abstract Scope |
Al-deposition from chloride melts and the effect of oxide concentration and chlorine gas on Al-deposition was studied. Voltammetry was conducted on various electrode substrates at 710 °C in equimolar NaCl-KCl, with and without AlCl3 present. CaO was added to obtain a relatively wide range of oxide concentrations and Al/O molar ratios for which the Al-deposition was studied. The deposition potential shifts cathodically, and the current for Al-deposition decreases with increasing oxide content, eventually reaching similar currents to voltammograms recorded in a melt with no AlCl3. The reduction and disappearance of the Al-deposition current indicate the presence of a stable AlOClx1-x complex, and possibly the formation and precipitation of Al2O3, which has low solubility in chloride melts. Bubbling Cl2 caused an additional reduction process slightly anodic of the potential for Al-deposition, which may be attributed to the formation of complexes of the general form NaxKyAlzClw in the presence of chlorine. |
