| Abstract Scope |
This study investigates the effect of sample preparation on the reliability of bath analysis by X-ray diffraction, with emphasis on the particle size distribution used for pressed pellet preparation. Results showed that particle size significantly influences diffraction peak characteristics and calculated fluoride content: heterogeneous particle size distribution was associated with overestimated fluoride results, whereas excessively fine material led to reduced peak intensity and underestimated values. To address this issue, milling and pressing parameters were systematically evaluated in order to define the most suitable comminution time and preparation conditions to obtain an optimal particle size range. Controlling particle size proved essential for improving result reproducibility and achieving better agreement between laboratory measurements and actual electrolytic cell conditions. These findings confirm that sample preparation is a critical step in bath analysis and expose bath granulometry as a variable that has received limited attention in process control strategies. |
