Meeting 2026 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition
Symposium Scandium Extraction and Use in Aluminum Alloys
Presentation Title Syndicate to Develop Supply Chain Aluminum Scandium Master Alloy
Author(s) Tim Grbavac
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Tim Grbavac
Abstract Scope Opportunity cost considerations at major Aluminum alloy producers have hindered the testing of and experimentation with Sc-containing alloys, delaying the adoption of these alloys that promise to revolutionize defense, aerospace, and commercial industries. FEAM proposes, buoyed by past efforts, to develop a syndicate of smaller companies to create a US domestic capacity to produce one million pounds of ingot and billet of Sc-containing alloys to facilitate testing and adoption of this cutting-edge material and create an active market for Al-Sc alloys. This effort, potentially supported by US government and/or its affiliated entities, would enable the development of a comprehensive Sc supply chain while taking advantage of the flexibil-ity and entrepreneurship inherent to small and medium-sized businesses that are not as impacted by institutional and bureaucratic constraints.
