| Abstract Scope |
Iowa State University established, under the leadership of Professor Scott Chumbley, a Study Abroad version of the classical introductory class to materials science and engineering. The class, which is split ~50-50 between an on-campus spring class and a ~4 week study abroad program, conducts the study abroad in London, at Brunel University. The activities, which includes industrial and historical tours, as well as a regular visit to the Kirkaldy Testing Works facility in London (the first independent mechanical testing operation anywhere in the world). These visits, strategically timed with course content, provide an opportunity for students to directly and socially discuss their learning, providing exciting opportunities for improved long-term understanding. The structure of the class will be presented, as will the tightly integrated support system, both of which foster particular aspects of student development. |
