We prepared the Ni45Co23Fe9Al11Ti12 and Ni43.9Co22.4Fe8.8Al10.7Ti11.7B2.5 (at.%) alloys (H1 and H2, respectively) by casting and homogenization in Ar. The H1 alloy consisted of the ordered L12 matrix phase and a minor fraction of BCC phase. The grain boundaries in the L12 matrix exhibited disordered layers of the FCC phase of 6-10 nm in thickness. Somewhat thinner (4 nm) layers of disordered phase were observed at the L12/BCC interphase boundaries. The H2 alloy consisted of the L12 phase and a minor fraction of TiB2 precipitates. The disordered phase at the grain boundaries in this alloy was by a factor of two thicker than in its H1 counterpart. Also, somewhat thinner layers of disordered FCC phase were observed at the L12/TiB2 interphase boundaries. We considered the thermodynamic origins of stability of disordered grain- and interphase boundary layers and determined the effect of disordered layers on the local mechanical properties of the alloys. |
