Abstract Scope |
Halides are often used in the shape-controlled synthesis of noble metal nanostructures. Chloride in the form of HCl is frequently added to the polyol synthesis of Ag nanocubes. Cl- selectively caps {100} facets, guiding the reduction of {111} facets to produce cubes with sharp corners. In comparison, adding HBr produces random polyhedra, similar to a synthesis without halides. However, a combination of HCl and HBr was found to produce nanorods with high yield. XRD revealed the in situ formation of mixed halide salts (AgClxBr1-x) during synthesis. The Ksp of AgCl is much larger than that of AgBr, with the ternary structures possessing intermediate solubilities. With this in mind, we synthesized uniform AgClxBr1-x nanoparticles ex situ, allowing us to finely control Br-/Cl-’s release. We also hypothesize that HBr reacts with the polyol solvent producing water, which then reduces PVP end groups from aldehyde to hydroxyl which are known to produce wires. |
