Abstract Scope |
Over the past twenty years numerous individuals and organisations have exhibited great optimism for the growth of magnesium applications. Over this period the research output, measured in papers published on magnesium alloys, has grown by an order of magnitude. While the production of magnesium alloys has roughly doubled in this period, it remains small compared to other materials.
The actual and anticipated past developments of magnesium alloys are reviewed, compared and contrasted. A number of case studies are described including the development of creep resistant alloys for powertrain applications. Applications that are now under threat of obsolesce under a shift to electric vehicles. A range of future opportunities and challenges for magnesium alloys are described from the perspective of comparative material properties. |
