Effective off-gas cleaning is essential for metallurgical operations to safety and environmental regulations. Novel processes often rely on adapted off-gas treatment systems, assuming compatibility with new off-gas compositions without thoroughly evaluating fume generation rates or the extent of gas cleaning required.
This study characterises the off-gas from a novel process at pilot scale through a comprehensive testing campaign involving off-gas composition analysis, temperature and pressure measurements, flow rate monitoring, dust collection, and particle size distribution assessment. An off-gas model was developed to validate the theoretical gas evolution and predict conditions at the industrial scale. These insights served as a roadmap to the selection and trade-off of suitable abatement technologies for scale-up.
This paper presents the development of the off-gas model, highlights key findings from pilot-scale testing, and discusses the major challenges encountered in designing off-gas treatment systems for emerging metallurgical processes. |
