Lithium alloys are challenging to characterize due to the fragility of the Lithium species when bombarded with a densely focused electron beam. Energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) is known as a non-destructive electron microscopy characterization method. Still, quantifying lithium in materials via EDS remains difficult because the Kα X-rays from lithium are very low energy (55 eV in pure metal) and because the electron beam can cause substantial structural changes. Specialized windowless EDS detectors are required to detect this X-ray line. Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) is a transmission electron microscopy technique that can quantify lithium via inelastic-scattering energy-loss measurements of the through-sample transmitted electron beam. In this work, we report on the path and obstacles to quantifying lithium in several Li-Mg alloys using both windowless EDS and EELS within the same FE-S(T)EM environment. Among other findings, we found that lithium X-ray detection via EDS is impaired by surface impurities and by the surrounding magnesium in higher-Mg alloys. |
