Residual strains in additively manufactured (AM) builds show substantial variation based not only on the microstructure but also the geometry and constraints of the build. Therefore, a non-destructive, volumetric mapping of the residual strain tensor is key to benchmarking the additive manufacturing process. Energy dispersive diffraction (EDD) using polychromatic X-rays provides a tool with the penetrative power and spatial resolution necessary to probe both component-scale residual strains as well as on the build-unit (bead) scale. In this work, using the toroidal-slit 23-detector EDD instrument at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source, we measure both above-mentioned modalities of residual strains with good throughput and 3D spatial resolution. We also discuss strategies to mitigate the challenges posed by the microstructure (specifically texture and grain size) of the AM builds using novel sample scanning and data analysis strategies. |
