Yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ) and magnesium illuminate spinel (MgAl2O4) are widely used structural ceramics whose mechanical properties can be tailored through chemical modification and external stimuli. Doped and undoped YSZ and MgAl2O4 samples were sintered into dense disks and bars using spark plasma sintering(SPS). Hardness was measured using Vickers microindentation under an applied DC electric field ranging from 0 to 30 V, while fracture toughness was determined using three-point bending tests on sintered bars. Na doping altered the hardness and fracture toughness of both ceramic systems. Field-assisted indentation also revealed changes in localized deformation and crack-initiation behavior under an applied electric field. These results indicated that sodium doping and electric-field assisted mechanical testing can be used as complementary approaches to tune the mechanical response of YSZ and MgAl2O4 ceramics. |
