It is well known that electric current enhances plasticity of metals. However, its underlying mechanisms remain very elusive in terms of interaction between crystalline defects and current. In this work, we conduct in-situ transmission electron microscopy electro-mechanical tests on magnesium single crystals and track the motion of pyramidal dislocations in real-time. We show that electric current substantially reduces the flow stress during plastic deformation and lowers the activation stress for pyramidal dislocation glide. Notably, edge-type pyramidal dislocations, which typically exhibit a low mobility and a jerky motion mode, glide more easily and smoothly under the applied current. Our results suggest that Joule heating is not a primary driving factor. First‑principles simulations are also conducted, and the results show that electric current weakens atomic bonding at the dislocation core and thus lowers the energy barrier for dislocation glide. |
