Abstract Scope |
Grain refinement is a promising technique that improves both the strength and toughness. Here, a fine grained microstructure was achieved in a medium Mn austenitic stainless steel (14Cr-8Mn-1Ni) by reverting strain-induced martensite (SIM) formed upon deformation. The fraction of SIM governs the grain refinement achieved and consequently the mechanical properties. Reversion at 600°C for 24h resulted in a dual-phase heterogeneous microstructure with alternating regions of austenite and martensite of < 1 μm size and a 1 GPa yield strength. Reversion at 825°C, resulted in a uniform microstructure with grain size of 3 μm with yield strength of 780 MPa. Using this knowledge, a gradient microstructure in a plate was produced along the thickness by compressing it using knurled platens and then reverting this at 600°C for 24h or 825°C for 15 min. The microstructure of these are characterized and correlated with the mechanical properties. |
