Abstract Scope |
The sustainable transformation into an advanced and green future largely depends on the waste management strategies, including waste lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Here, we investigated energy-intensive and ecofriendly recycling methods for waste LIBs, where we not only recover lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) but also reutilize it as a cathode material in manufacturing new LIBs. In this research we used waste coffee powder as a biomass source and during thermal treatment, reducing gases and carbon convert waste LiCoO2 into Li2CO3 and Co3O4. Afterwards, through the water leaching process, 93.27% of Co and 89.23% of Li were recovered and from the recovered materials, LiCoO2 was regenerated which showed outstanding electrochemical performance. The EverBatt model showed that this recycling technology reduces energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and makes it more profitable than conventional recycling technologies. Moreover, this study will play a vital role in terms of fulfilling several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). |
