Abstract Scope |
This presentation shares our practical experiences of solving several problems related to casting defects such as oxides and shrinkage and how they were solved in a very fast and reliable way by the use of knowledge generated by several research and academic groups, specifically that of David StJohn’s group in Australia. We will learn how a problem can arise overnight from nowhere in a high value, high volume block or head or water pump, with the amount of scrap rising from 0.5% up to 50 % or how the fatigue properties can decrease by 40%. The solutions can be described as elegant solutions because they are based on knowledge and best of all “they work and allows us to be snippers rather than using a machine gun or as we say in Mexico, using the “piņata solution” ( i.e. being blind fold while trying to hit the piņata -) |
