Abstract Scope |
Nd-Fe-B magnet has been one of the most sought-after high performance permanent magnet. The coercivity of Nd-Fe-B magnet can be increased either by reducing the grain size or by tuning the grain boundary chemistry. Accordingly, alloying of Nb to the Nd-Fe-B magnets restricts the grain growth by the formation of Nb nano-clusters. Further, when Nd or Dy containing low melting eutectics are diffused along grain boundaries, the Nd-Fe-B grains gets decoupled owing to decoration of eutectics which improves coercivity.
In order to understand the process of grain boundary diffusion of eutectics, a custom designed correlative microscopy platform was utilized enabling imaging in transmission geometry along with precise local chemical composition analysis using Atom Probe Tomography. This correlative methodology applied to grain boundary engineered commercial magnets, provided deeper insights into the role of starting microstructures on the precipitation kinetics and hence on the final magnetic properties of the magnets. |
