| Abstract Scope |
This poster will discuss new developments in reactive cathode MgO electrolysis with distillation. Solid oxide membrane inert anodes can generate high purity oxygen as a by-product, eliminating direct CO₂ emissions. Continuous distillation can benefit from a new method for inline measurement of condenser liquid metal level. Impurity separation can recover more of the reactive liquid cathode metal, reducing the amount of make-up required, and improving overall process economics. Finite element analysis can elucidate transport behavior and act as a tool for improving distiller design. And cradle-to-gate emissions analysis can help to understand and mitigate unintended emissions in the magnesium metal supply chain. This technology could potentially use existing aluminum smelting infrastructure to make primary magnesium at lower cost than aluminum. |
