Abstract Scope |
Unusual microstructures can result from eutectoid decomposition in alloy systems where the product phases result from disorder/order transformations. In Co-Pt, the nanochessboard microstructure forms as a quasi-periodic tiling. producing exchange-coupled ferromagnetism between the “hard” L10 and “soft” L12 phases. We have explored the magnetic behavior using first-order reversal curves and micromagnetic simulations. In Fe-Pd, the eutectoid transformation process instead produces polytwinned L10 plates that propagate across the surrounding L12 grains. Furthermore this system can order to a different tetragonal product phase, L1’, that was first theoretically predicted by William Shockley in 1938. and our work is the first direct observation of L1’ in any bulk alloy. The magnetization of L10 and L1’ does not appear to agree with prior measurements of the moments on Fe and Pd atoms in a similar composition range.
